On Christ Alone

As I pondered upon what the apostle’ Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah” (Mark 9:5, NIV), I could have assumed that he wants to show hospitality and that he wants to hold a Feast of Tabernacles, and also to institutionalize the awesome visitation of Moses and Elijah. However, Peter is being painted as impetuous, impulsive, impatient, and impossible. At the same time, he’s on a sharp learning curve. He is spiritually perceptive. He can recognize Moses and Elijah at the spot. He shares his ideas even when he’s not sure. He’s a man of action, effort, and initiative who doesn’t bury his talent. Yet, his Three-Tent Plan on the mountain top represents a fundamental error in theology. He wants to put Jesus on the same level with Moses and Elijah. Yet, surprisingly, the voice came from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him” (Mark 9:8, NIV).

Indeed, today, Jesus Christ is the one Word of God whom we have to hear, trust and obey in life and in death (KARL BARTH) as he highlighted this point inside the 40 Days (2019) devotional text. Listen to him. Just as Peter listens to Jesus,

Will you & I listen to Jesus today?

Do you often feel compelled to take charge, say something, doing something, even when you’re not sure what’s going on?

Today, this encourages us to emulate Moses and Elijah for being faithful and fearless servants of God, just as Peter had a high regard for them, Hence, this would prompt us to be faithful and fearless servants of God. Indeed, Christ has surpassed the prophets (HEBREWS 1:1-2, 3:3-6, NIV).

Hence, I pray for greater vigilance as we place Christ in the centre of our lives as we cultivate intimacy with Him through the Word and prayer, letting God awaken our ear to listen as a disciple, as one being taught (ISAIAH 50:4, NIV), as I did my today’s meditation.
