CHRISTIAN VIEWPOINT FEATURE #15

What is Progressive Evangelicalism?
This article by Dr Roland Chia highlights the fact that progressive Christianity has routinely devalued the significance of doctrine and creed, and presented itself as more concerned with orthopraxis than with orthodoxy. However, progressive evangelicalism has in many ways followed suit, making the question what would Jesus do their fundamental focus, and not so much who he claims to be.

Christian N̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶i̶s̶m Faithfulness:
This article by Dr Roland Chia reminds us that as citizens of an earthly nation, Christians must strive to contribute to the flourishing of society, loving others faithfully as disciples’ of Christ. This requires Christians always to stand on the side of justice and truth, and to resist and reject all that is false and dehumanising. Truly, a Christian expresses his measured and critical patriotism to his country – by being a faithful and obedient disciple of Christ who loves God above all else.

AI and Unfreedom:
This article by Dr Roland Chia shows how freedom is not only highly valued in secular society, but it can be a central concept in Christian theological anthropology – a Christian understanding of what it means to be a human being, the bearer of the divine image. The theological understanding of freedom and how it radically differs from secular accounts need not detain us at this point, yet it lays the importance of this concept in the Christian faith.

Jack Hibbs – A Key End Times Topic Shrouded in Deception:
In this article, Pastor Jack Hibbs calls for unwavering support for Israel and cautioned against the misinformation being spread by commentators lacking the proper expertise. Emphasizing the nation’s unique role in biblical prophecy, Hibbs challenges the narratives critical of Israel and argues that such positions often stem from a lack of understanding. Hibbs criticized many conservative commentators for stepping outside their areas of expertise to spread lies and conspiracies about Israel. Prophetic Plotlines Unfolding: War in Israel
It has been 10 months since the brutal massacres and horrifying videos of what Hamas did to Jewish families in Israel on Oct. 7. Unfortunately, much of the world has already moved on. Many have all but forgotten the graphic scenes that dominated world headlines for the month of October 2023. Perhaps more shocking is how world opinion has turned against the people of Israel in their response to defending their nation from further massacres that have been promised by Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and other Islamic terrorist organizations.

The question that many rational people are asking is, How is the world obsessed with Israel, which makes up less than 1% of the world’s population, waging an unwanted defensive war, while ignoring openly evil regimes slaughtering and enslaving millions?(Reported by Doug Hershey in Prophetic Insight (2nd Sept 2024) – https://mycharisma.com/propheticrevival/prophetic-plotlines-unfolding-war-in-israel/)

Holy Indignation:
This article explains that the best example of righteous anger in the OT is arguably Moses’ reaction when he saw that the Israelites had fashioned a golden calf and made it an object of worship. In his anger, he shattered the tablets of the Law, an act which symbolises that the people of God had breached their covenant with God.

Perry Stone: The Spiritual War Waging Over Israel
In a message from Caesarea, Perry Stone gave a prophetic warning about the battle that is being waged over Israel. Stone gave viewers a few questions to ponder about Israel. “Why has there been such a battle for the nation of Israel, surrounded by nations that hate her, and why have the Jewish people been perhaps the most persecuted group of people on the face of the earth?”

The Digital Immortalization of the Dead: A Christian Perspective

‘Gross Mockery’, ‘Offensive’, ‘Disrespectful’:
This article shows that during the Opening Ceremony, 18 drag queens re–created the scene of Jesus’ final meal with his disciples just before his crucifixion. The depiction featured half–naked performers behind a long table, with one performer, presumably representing Jesus, standing in the middle with a halo on her head. The drag queens on either side of her can be seen writhing suggestively along the table.

While some are of the view that the scene depicts an ancient Greek Bacchanal, a Roman festival honouring Bacchus, the god of wine and revelry, many regard it as a disdainful portrayal of the Last Supper. That is why the scene has sparked such vigorous backlash on social media.

A Certain Hope

In my Advent’s meditation for today, I thank God that He does not shame me because of my disability but He lets me have Christ as the source of my hope (Colossians 1:27, NIV) as God pours out His love into my heart even as I meditated upon what the apostle Paul said, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5, NIV). Indeed, hope speaks of God becoming flesh from His Word to dwell among us (John 1:14, NIV) as He breaks forth into the world of our darkness – by sending Jesus down through His birth that came out from Mary’s womb (Luke 1:26–33, NIV), and for the fulfillment of the redemptive prophecy of God to take place (Luke 1:54–55, NIV) which reflects upon the promises of God through faith and assurance He given us today (Hebrews 11:1, NIV).

Because of Christ’s love poured out in my heart, I thank God for His “peace” that I can have with Him as I place my faith in Jesus as my certain hope to see me through my life today. As such, I want to “pour out” this hope of Christ’s love into the lives of others who are seeking encouragement and answers in this challenging world today.

Where does your hope lie in today?

Hubris and Humility

As I did my weekend’s meditation, I pondered upon how Jesus said to Peter, “you will all fall away because of me this night....’ Peter answered, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” Jesus said, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same (MATTHEW 26:31-35, NIV), I see how Jesus warned the disciples that this very night they will all stumble and scatter from him like startled sheep. They all deny it. And, Peter normally speaks for the Twelve and now he speaks for himself. By this, he rates himself above his fellow disciples and trusts in his own ability to endure suffering and death for Christ, yet he does not yet know himself. Nor the prowess of Satan, the roaring lion (1 PETER 5:8, NIV) nor the saving work of Christ, the Lion of Judah.

Truly, there’re times when we think we are God’s special gift to humanity. We become addicted to words of approval and affirmation. The Bible exhorts us to think soberly of ourselves (ROMANS 12:3, NIV). As the apostle Paul said, “I do not even judge myself… It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God” (1 CORINTHIANS 4:3-5, NIV), this encourages me to submit myself to Christ’s judgment. And, I confess, if my flesh had its way, for I would be worse than Peter, just as the two apostles said, “The flesh is worthless” (JOHN 6:63, NIV) and “you oppose the proud. You favour the humble” (JAMES 4:6, NIV), at the same time, I give thanks to God if I’ve grown and flourished in any way at all, it is because of His grace.

Indeed, take all my will, my passion, self and pride. I now surrender, Lord, in me abide (J. EDWIN ORR) and it was through pride that the devil became the devil (C.S. LEWIS) as they mentioned their points inside the 40 Days (2019) devotional text. And, this encourages me to make my ignorance & mistakes accountable to God & find strength to share my struggles with the flesh with a trusted friend whom I can confide in, whenever I identify and need to confront ‘devil’ within me today.

As the writer said, to help us always to praise rather than to criticize, to sympathize rather than to condemn, to encourage rather than to discourage, to build rather than to destroy. And, to think of people at their best rather than at their worst; his, we ask for thy name’s sake (WILLIAM BARCLAY) as he mentioned this point inside the 40 Days (2019) devotional text.

Are you a slow listener and a fast talker today?

Truly, Jesus said, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned (MATTHEW 12:36-37, NIV). And, the Psalmist said, “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips” (PSALM 141:3, NIV). Again, the Psalmist said, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight” (PSALM 19:14, NIV).
