MISSIONARY NEWS FEATURE #16

India:

The “New India” is a youthful, ambitious, cosmopolitan and modern entity, where differences of religion, caste and gender mean less and less. It is increasingly urban and tech-savvy. The India of call centres, cricket, Bollywood, bhangra and globally connected Indian culture is exposed to and open to new ideas and ways of living, including Christianity. The most significant influence in this context is materialism - as capable of entrapping Hindus as any other group. This younger generation - 70% of India is under age 35, and 31% under age 15 - will shape India's future. As such, they are a hugely strategic group to reach for Jesus; completely new and different missiological strategies must be undertaken to communicate and model the gospel to them. Indian churches and missions are now focusing on this issue; initial success thus far is very modest.

French Guiana:
French Guiana has a new image as a developed multicultural society, rather than as a place for imprisoned criminals. This change also brought French secularism and moral challenges. Many young people cannot find employment and are restless. Graphic pornography from French satellite TV disturbs the moral framework. Families suffer with high rates of illegitimate births and many single-parent homes. Harm to the environment, illegal immigration, and human trafficking for the gold mine industry all cause problems.

El Salvador:
Praise God that peace has held since the end of the civil war in 1992. Since then, corruption in politics has been a big problem in El Salvador, but multiple free elections have occurred, with different parties prevailing at different times. El Salvador’s main struggles are now against poverty and gang violence. Money sent home from Salvadorans working abroad is the largest part of the economy.

Dominican Republic:
Practicing Catholics have substantially decreased in recent years, indicating a high degree of nominalism. Do pray for those who still adhere to Catholicism and those who have disaffiliated themselves that the Holy Spirit might speak to their hearts about the reality of the gospel.

Denmark:
Denmark retains a core of Christian traditions and values in its social laws and values. And Danes began to show more openness to spiritual things in recent years. But over half the population is agnostic or atheist by some reports. And many people’s spiritual search does not lead them to Christian faith and the Church. Do pray for the Danes to rediscover the faith that shaped so much of the nation’s history and society.

Cyprus:
The 50-year conflict between the two communities (Greeks and Turks), fuelled by the involvement of foreign powers, has gone on too long. Political intransigence by a few hampers the reunification seemingly favoured by the majority. Do pray that old grievances and bitterness might be overcome by forgiveness. Do pray that external meddling would stop and that Cypriots might move forward into a unified future

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC):
The powerful spiritual evil that influences much of this land shows itself in deeper ways than wars, killings, greed, and corruption. Wicked men committed widespread rape, unspeakable brutality, cannibalism, and witchcraft against adults and children. The DRC is the worst country in the world regarding sexual violence against women. How could these horrors spread throughout a land with over 90% who profess Christianity? This moves our hearts, and calls us to spiritual warfare. Cry out for God to deliver this land, and to bind the spirits that have such power over a suffering people.

Devotional for Father’s Day

As did my weekend’s reading, I pondered upon what Matthew 1:19 (NIV) said, ‘Because Joseph was faithful to the law,’  I saw how Joseph was a righteous man who handled Mary’s pregnancy in a right way and how Jesus’ birth brought him to the challenge of being a father to the Saviour of the world. His moral behaviour too was exemplary as seen in Matthew 1:25 (NIV). Without reacting with bitterness or harshness, I noted how Joseph made every effort to protect the love of his life. He did not want to expose Mary to public shame (Matthew 1:19, NIV).

Yet, God spoke to Joseph many times, but initially through an angel who appeared in a dream (Matthew 1:20– 21, NIV), and by this, his wedding was alive again. Truly, Joseph heard from God in Matthew 2:13b saying, ‘Escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you’ and in Matthew 2:19–21, the Lord instructed him to return to Israel, and in Matthew 2:22–23, he again heard from God and decided to settle down in Nazareth.

Fathers, let’s always strive to do what is right, even when it may not seem the best way forward; even when life seems unfair and painful. Thus, we set this best example for our children on Father’s Day. We have to learn to handle crises with dignity and a ‘quiet spirit’ like Joseph.

Truly, Joseph obeyed the Lord and how he faithfully fulfilled the requirements of the Scriptures with regards to his family and his Son (Luke 2:21-24, 27, 39, 41, NIV). As a result, Jesus ‘became strong, was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him’ (Luke 2:40). By this, Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man (Luke 2:52, NIV).

Hence, I pray for fathers to implant the Word of God in the hearts of their children as I did my weekend’s reading.

Are you upholding the task of a father today?

Prayer Response to this featured article:
Jesus, help us to fulfill our role as a father and pray for God’s grace and wisdom to enable us to implant the Word of God in the hearts of our children

“I Will Pour Out My Spirit”

Notice:
On 19th June, your Father's Day article (Sunday) will be posted up from 3.00pm onwards.

As I meditated upon how the prophet Joel recorded what the LORD said, “In those days, I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants – men and women alike – and they will prophesy” (Acts 2:18, NLT), I read how the Holy Spirit came and began the “last days” – an era of God’s work, and how the Holy Spirit has descended upon all disciples from the young and old, men and women to slave and free, regardless of nationality or race, and that they had professed Christ in their faith when they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit into their lives that unite them to be with Christ, like how Jesus commissioned this baptism of the Holy Spirit to all of His disciples (Galatians 3:27, Matthew 28:19, NIV).

Hence, I thank Jesus for baptizing me with the gift of the Holy Spirit enabling me to exercise speaking in tongues and how He has made me a heir when He adopted me to be a son of God (Galatians 4:7, NIV). By this, I live in the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit within me, as God speaks His message to others through me and accomplish His work through my life as I did my weekend’s reading.

Have you received the baptism of the Holy Spirit today?

Prayer Response to this featured article:
Jesus, reveal your will and do your work in the present time, with the people you have placed near us, to bring you glory.

Where Is God?

Notice:
On 5th June, your Pentecost Sunday's article will be posted up from 3.00pm onwards.

As I meditated upon what the Psalmist said, “Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long” (Psalm 74:22, NIV), I noted how the wicked had constantly reproached God through their language and their conduct which seems foolish in the sight of God. As such, this prompts me to have a real reproach to God that reflects Jesus in my honour to the world today. Indeed, I read how Dr. M. Scott Peck said how “Life is difficult” and that “this is a great truth because once we truly see this truth we transcend it” as he highlighted this point inside the Every Day Light online devotional text. By this, I see how calamities and suffering occur will never be fully solved while we are here on earth as Mick Brooks also pointed out inside the online devotional text.

By this, I read how the psalmist concluded about how God has been the strength of his heart and his portion forever that he made the Sovereign Lord as his refuge whom he could speak of His wondrous deeds that He had done, amidst of his struggles to see the wickedness and pride of the people where they speak of their arrogance towards God (Psalms 73:27–28, 2–11, NIV).

Hence, this encourages me to wait for God to speak to my spirit as He’s my strength of my heart and my portion forever as I take refuge in the Sovereign Lord whom I could speak of His wondrous deeds that He had done through my life today.

Is God your strength and portion today?

Related by Faith

As I meditated upon what Jesus said to Mary, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home” (John 19:26b –27, NIV), I am being reminded of how the mother of Jesus became part of the household of the disciple John, and how she also became a “mother” to John and took care of him. Indeed, Jesus made sure that this relationship of mutual adoption framed their future even as he paid the ultimate price for all our sins.

Today, I give thanks to God for mothers who do take good care of us – they feed us, they clothe us and they love us. On top of that, they are related to the same believing faith as we do. I love my mother, what about you today?

Truly, we’re to love our mothers and to one another just as Christ have loved us (John 13:35, NIV).

Prayer Response to this featured article:
Jesus, enable us to express our love, hospitality, and generosity to mothers and to others just as you love us.

Christ is Risen!

Notice:
Please take note that MOTHER'S DAY devotional article will be published up here on 8th May from 3.00pm onwards.

As I meditated upon how the angel told Mary, ‘“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him”’ (Mark 16:6, NIV), I am being reminded of how the angel said to Mary that Christ has risen from the grave and that He wasn’t found here any here. Truly, I thank God that Christ has overcome death and how He has risen from the grave – giving me the hope and the light of God’s future promise of resurrection enabling me to live victoriously in Christ today.

Amazingly, I rejoice in this victory truth of Christ’s resurrection as I calm my fears & my anxieties knowing that I have an encounter with the risen Jesus Christ as my Lord today. As such, I want to live a victorious life as I step into Christ’s resurrection life from this day forward onwards and be no longer weighed down by my graveclothes leading me to death of sin but to live in the promise of His resurrection, while I reflected upon my Easter Sunday’s reading.

How are you stepping into Christ’s resurrection life today?

Prayer Response to this featured article:
Thank you Jesus for giving us life through your resurrection;

CHRISTIAN VIEWPOINT FEATURE #5

How Human Is the Mind of Christ?

Christ is the heart of Christianity. It is hardly surprising, then, that from the beginning of church history his’ own person has been the target of foes from without and heretics from within. Early on, some attacked the doctrine of his eternal deity, others the belief that he had a real physical body, and yet others that he had a real human mind.

The First Call to Worship – Twelve Attributes of God in One Verse:

In 1969, as Apollo 11 orbited the moon, the voice of Neil Armstrong sounded back to earth with some of the most familiar words in the Bible: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” As Genesis 1:1 stands, it is a simple yet profound statement of fact. Yet it is also more than that. It is factual, yes, but it is also liturgical. Genesis 1:1 is the first call to worship. In the opening line of Scripture, God calls us to worship him for who he is and what he has done in creation.

Parents lack of biblical worldview puts children at “spiritual disadvantage”: Barna warns, 6 out of 10 US parents don't view the Bible as a “reliable and accurate source of God’s truth”:

A prominent Evangelical researcher has warned that the lack of a biblical worldview among parents of preteens puts youth at a “spiritual disadvantage.”

The George Barna–led Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University released the first report of its American Worldview Inventory 2022 Tuesday, which analyzed “the worldview dilemma of American parents.”

The report was based on a survey of 600 American parents with children younger than 13 conducted in January. The respondents were asked several dozen worldview – related questions that “measure both beliefs and behavior within eight categories of worldview application.”

While 67% of parents with children younger than 13 identified as Christians – just 2% of those surveyed subscribed to a biblical worldview as defined by the researchers; According to the report, a biblical worldview “emerges from accepting the Bible as a relevant and authoritative guide for life.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves – Questioning How We Frame Reality:

Let’s talk about framing. Not framing as in home construction, but framing as in the way we perceive reality. Framing refers to how we see things. In particular, it refers to the fact that, as human beings, we don’t merely see things; we see things as.

The Very First Prayer – Why Man Began to Call on God:

Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden, which God himself has provided for this very purpose. And they are charged to turn the whole of creation into a place where God can be known and enjoyed (see Genesis 1:28 and 2:15–16). Relating to God, for them, was natural and unhindered. After the events of Genesis 3, of course, everything gets so much harder.

Mindfulness and Christian Meditation:

Walk the War Before You – What It Means to Live by the Spirit:

“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”(Galatians 5:16–17)

In seminary, this passage reshaped my vision of the Christian life. At one level, the passage is simple. It contains an exhortation (“walk by the Spirit”), a promise (“and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh”), and an explanation or rationale (the conflict described in verse 17). But as we meditate on this passage, we discover that it also offers a threefold vision for the Christian life as a whole.

The Man of God You Could Become – Six Steps Towards Spiritual Maturity:

Do you want to grow as a man of God?

Maybe you’re a new believer. Your character drastically differs from just a couple years ago, but you know you have a long way to go. Or maybe you’ve been a believer for a long time, but you’ve sensed yourself spiritually stagnating. You’d be hard pressed to point out a way you’ve made evident spiritual progress in the last year.

If either of those profiles fit you, this article, and its two goals, are for you. The first is to give you a new ambition, namely, becoming a man of God. The second is to give you some directions for the journey.

The “man” in “man of God” is deliberate; I’m speaking particularly to men. Much of what I’ll say also applies to women, but the next-to-last section zeroes in on a uniquely male calling.

Jim Bakker: The Most Critical Key to Revival:

The most remarkable thing happened on Sept. 11, 2001. In one hour, 19 people had shaken the country to its absolute core. For the second time in 60 years, a foreign power had attacked the United States on its own soil. Americans felt vulnerable and guilty, and they knew there was only one place to go. And that was the church. Business after business put up flags and put “God Bless America” on their marquees and in their windows. America wanted God. Revival was beginning, or so it seemed.

Easter Fear Is Natural – Jesus’ unnatural resurrection helps us fear not:

Empty churches on Easter Sunday around the world represent an image that, until this year, would have made sense only in a fever-pitched 1990s end-times novel. Yet, in the middle of a global pandemic, that will now be our reality. The grief that Christians already face over missing their church services for necessary social distancing will intensify when it comes to the preeminent day on the Christian calendar. But if we pay attention, we may see something new and holy about Easter in quarantine. And that something is fear.

Korean Pastor Yonggi Cho was long known as the pastor of the largest church in the world. But things have changed. Grassroots church planting movements are growing with a speed and vigor that most would find hard to believe.

What would you say if you learn that with 800,000 members the ‘pastor’ of one of the largest churches in the world lives in North India? Beginning with just 12 people in 1994, Randeep Mathews’ house-church based movement started even before he was a Christian.

Indonesia: How a mother found her lost son through a prophetic word:

On a visit to Indonesia German missiologist Wolfgang Simson taught a group of Jesus followers an important insight: “In the Kingdom of God people share a revolutionary lifestyle with each other.”

He elaborated: “Number one: eating as the central element of meeting. Number two: truly sharing, koinonia, so that by the end of the day there is neither rich or poor.” Simson illustrated this with Jesus’ interaction with the rich young ruler, and the story of Zaccheus in Luke 19.

Leaving a Spiritual Legacy

As teens, my sister and I didn’t understand my mom’s decision to receive Jesus as her Savior, but we couldn’t deny the changes we saw in her...
