I recently
had been reading in the Gospel of Matthew the story of Jesus' birth in
Bethlehem. As he finished, he noticed
his bookmark for that day's cover-to-cover reading in Micah was very near the
Gospel of Matthew who said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary
home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew
1:20, NIV). But though only 50 pages separate Micah and Matthew in Bible, the
prophet Micah lived eight centuries before Jesus (Micah 5:2-5, NIV) and other
references in the Old Testament points to the coming Messiah's birth how would
He bring us into perspective to have an inspiring hope of this future event as
a message to relay to God's people. By Christ's resurrection, would we realize
that God loves us and has made a place for us in the kingdom; this story of
God's love and mercy is found throughout Scripture, just as the prophet said, “But
you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of
you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from
of old, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2, NIV).
Hence, we find that our heritage lies in the promise of eternal life in the kingdom of God.
