The scars of the terrible genocide of 1975-79 remain evident. Nearly two million were killed, over 60,000 lost life’ or limb to landmines and most of the population over age 30 need deep healing from the trauma of their losses and suffering.

Albania:
Answer to Prayer:
Thank God for His work in this land that, for years, was resolutely closed to the gospel. Many credit concentrated prayer and intercession as major factors in seeing Albania opened for ministry. The Taliban imposed a harsh brand of Islam on the nation and continue to be a threat to national stability and security.

Answer to Prayer to unfinished tasks in Asia:
The hatred and violence of Islamist extremists most likely contribute to many Muslims’ disillusion and greater openness to the gospel. While there are pockets of particularly momentous change, the inflow of Muslims into the Kingdom of God is indeed happening through much of the Muslim world, albeit under the radar and on a modest level in many areas.

China:
Chinese believers continue to remain firm in their faith even amid persecution and tension between the U.S. and China. Believers in China have faced much. Tensions between the U.S. and China don’t look like they will thaw anytime soon. Persecution continues to increase, threatening Christians and those who follow other religions as well.

Pakistan:
On Christmas Morning in Lahore, Pakistan, a group of 50-60 Muslim men attacked a Christian church during their Christmas service. They aimed to kidnap and assault the women in attendance. The security guards and other men at the church fought back with bare hands against the staff-wielding intruders, giving the women time to escape. Many Christian men suffered blunt trauma injuries and fractures in the fight.

Russia is a proud nation with a great legacy, but it remains a mystery and a contradiction. Some see a bleak future, others a resurgent Russia. Some regard the last decade or two as an economic. Do pray for political wisdom. Russia is prone to authoritarian rule and admits that in the current climate good governance is more important than democracy and personal freedoms. Current and forecasted troubles would further erode freedoms and entrench a centralized power. Do pray for the balancing of strong government with democratic accountability and respect of basic freedoms.
Christian leaders, who are few in number, must rise to many great challenges. Lack of training in the past, need for funding today and loss of many pastors and educators through emigration contribute to this lack of leaders. The role of foreigners will be highly limited; solutions must come from within Russia.

Leadership development in churches is a great need. The average pastor supervises multiple churches. Most new churches lack a pastor and many pastors lack training. Active congregations with effective programmes will emerge from well-trained leaders.

Republic of Guyana (Latin America):

There is a vital, vibrant, growing evangelical witness and evangelicals as they’re under threat from persistent claims on its land by Venezuela and Suriname. The political sphere is defined along racial lines. The economy is vulnerable to the climate, as the disastrous floods of 2005 attest.

Guinea-Bissau:
There seems to be an increasing number of missionaries in the country, mostly Latin American and Asian, but notably fewer Westerners. The largest agencies are WEC, YWAM and Kairos (Brazil). Many new groups are arriving, including some theologically marginal bodies. Some set up denominations near existing churches rather than going to needy and unreached areas. The majority’ does not stay long term, and many are sent by their supporting churches without real accountability or support. Do pray for missionaries to cooperate across organizational lines and with the national Church; do also pray for a greater emphasis to be given to working among the unevangelized. Do pray for the church leadership to be solid, mature and indigenous in culture as they grow in increasingly numbers of people coming to faith.

Challenges for Prayer
Mayan culture is enjoying a renaissance after the rediscovery of their ancient civilization. For some, this is a resurrection of the old, long-submerged Mayan religion, but to others, it is a blossoming of indigenous Christianity aided by the many new translations of the Bible in indigenous languages.

Guam:
The Prison Fellowship of Guam has a ministry to prisoners that is also penetrating the indigenous population in a small but significant way. Do pray for resources to teach and train converts who remain in prison. Do pray for the grim legacy of slavery that has left its mark in the endemic economic culture. Do pray for the influx of US culture that weighs all of its pros and cons in its economic growth.

Greenland has been Christianized, but not converted.
